Research - to better enjoy your ingenuityBlue Wave is conducting research into the effectiveness of technical teams in cooperation with the Delft University of Technology. The objective of this research is to understand how emotions interact with rational thought, at least within the context of engineering and design. The personality characteristics of the individual are included as an influencing factor. As a result, we hope to better understand the interaction between engineers in multi-disciplinary design teams: how do they exchange information, build on each others' ideas, and evaluate and discard inferior concepts. We aim to protect the team, stakeholders and clients from inferior (or even unacceptable) design solutions, and to support them in enjoying the fruits of their ingenuity. Initial findings have been presented at Design2008 (Dubrovnik) and the XXIX International Congress of Psychology (Berlin, 2008) |
Our rationale"So you think you've got a good idea???" We can all imagine the strong emotions that arise when an idea that we have laboriously developed is tactlessly challenged. Similarly, we can feel the elation when we have finally identified the solution or design concept for a problem that has confounded us for so long. This research is inspired by our experience in industry, in which we worked closely with countless engineers in solving many difficult, bizarre and complex problems, and have witnessed how emotions color an exchange, and influence the outcome of the deliberations. |
